Mariner's KnotThe Mariner knot's usefullness stems from the fact that it's releasable under load, which makes it ideal for special rope systems like those needed for escaping a loaded belay.
1. All thats required is a carabiner a piece of accesory cord and a load.
2. Take the accesory cord thats under load, and take it through the carabiner, and loop it through twice.
3. Loop the unloaded bite of rope around the loaded strands several times.
4. Tuck the unloaded strand between the two loaded strands.
5. This is what the finished knot looks like. At this point the ease of this knot's releasability can be a blessing or a curse. Its highly recommended that you clip a carabiner through the unweighted bite of rope, and around the loaded strands. this will prevent the knot from releasing inadvertantly, and prevent failure if it does release accidentally.
