Though all of the following knots can be used for various activities they are organized by their most common purpose.

Overhand - The basis of many knots.

Square Knot - Tie two pieces of rope together, also known as the Reef Knot.

Taut Line - Make an adjustable loop (often used for tautening a tent).

Caving and Climbing

Anchors

Clove Hitch - Connecting rope to carabiner.

Emergency Ascending and Rappel Backup

Autoblock - Friction knot.

Bachmann - Friction knot.

Klemheist - Friction knot.

Prussic (or Prussik, Prusik, Prusic) - Friction knot.

Belay Device

Munter Hitch / Italian Hitch

Harness

Cat's Paw - Attach slings to harness.

Double Bowline - Attach rope to harness.

Figure Eight - Attach rope to harness.

Girth Hitch - Attach slings to harness.

Rewoven Figure Eight - Attach rope to harness.

Organization

Butterfly Coil - Tie a rope on your back.

Mountaineers Coil - Tie a rope in a loop for storage or over the shoulder transport.

Rescue

Garda Hitch - One way rope system.

Mariner's Knot - Releasable under load.

Mule Knot - Escape or lock a belay device.

Tie into the middle of a rope

Figure Eight on a Bite - Tie into the middle of the rope.

Alpine Butterfly - Tie into the middle of the rope.

Inline Figure Eight - Tie into the middle of the rope.

Tie two items together

Double Fishermans - Tie two ropes or cordlette together.

Water Knot / Tape Knot - Tie two pieces of webbing together.

Offset Overhand (EDK) - Tie two ropes together.
