Placing an 'active' Hex

Hexes can be placed at an angle (so two flat sections of the hex are touching the rock). If a downward force is created on the wire (or sling depending on the hex) a rotating force will be created, camming the hex into the rock.

Diagram Below: If the downward force (marked in purple) is created, a rotating force is created (due to the angle at which the wire leaves the hex). This rotating force attempts to turn the hex. The hex locks in place because the width of the hex (marked in yellow) is greater than the width of the rock (marked in green).

Hexes can be used like a stopper by pulling it into an appropriately sized narrowing crack.

Slings versus Wires

Hexes are available with slings or wires. Wires are firm enough so they extend your reach when placing the protection. Slings are less likely to shake out of place when rope drag occurs.
