I'm not too knowledgeable on compasses, but I did my first nav course with a Silva Trekker and I just liked Silva better than the WalMart orienteering compasses or military issue lensatics my buddies were using, so when time came to buy a new one, I ordered the Silva Ranger CLQ. I think it's well built and I enjoy using it.

I used this the whole way through forestry school. Easy to read. Everything you need to work with maps. Great compass.

A very good inexpensive base plate compass. Has some nice features like adjustable declination.

Doesn't do well after the third or fourth plane trip. They get a bubble in them.
