Time tested and loved by climbers and cavers. The new (2005) thumb trigger is nice but is not a major improvement so look out for the old models on sale or used.

Newer updates in 2010 increases ergonomics.

It has a big enough gap to put a hand with a glove on in, which is great for cavers. Multiple clip in positions are handy, and the ergonomic tilt of the handle is really nice too.
A bit on the spendy side.
Jumar, SRT, and CMI make good alternatives.

With three of these and a rope you can go anywhere. I love them. Simple, and most importantly, you KNOW you're secure. I'm sitting next to a backpack with six of them right now, and I'm considering not returning them to their owner.
Don't close your finger in it. Really.
Black Diamond makes the same thing.

Light weight and very easy to use. They grip the rope like nothing else and hold all day long.
IF they are used in the snow, the teeth can become clogged and not be able to grip the rope at all. Also a bit expensive.
A prusik knot (it's inexpensive and works no matter what).

These are pretty easy to operate and can deal with a little mud getting in them. They are the standard for setting up a rope walker and safer than a prusik.
Takes a couple uses before you get comfortable with it

made for aid, good for rigging, and if you want a work out use two and just climb a rope with out useing feet

Very fluid movement to open the cam. Attachment points all over the place. Never had it slip on wet grimy ropes. Way better than the Black Diamond counterpart.

Easy to use, easy to hold, and great clip in options. The new thumb trigger is really comfortable to work with and as a whole it is a well thought out piece of equipment.

Large padded handle, very rugged, aggressive teeth
Large, Heavy, unless shaved down, sharp teeth will cause rope to fray over multiple uses

Very simple, and work phenominally!
Might chew up the rope a bit if you use them a lot on the same rope.

The best in the business. The handled ascender that everyone else tries to copy.

This is the best ascension device from all that I've used (and there has been some...). Easy to use and resistent to wear.
Although simple, it can be used wrong! Read the manual first!
Anything in case of emergency :) Read and learn as much methods as you can to get yourself out of trouble if needed.
