Cred: 14 | | Really an excellent stove. I see why this stove is used by serious outdoorspeople. Took the stove on a trip to hike Mt. Whitney and it worked great even at sub-freezing temperatures and 10,000+ ft. Boiled water just fine, good on fuel too. It isn't the lightest stove out there, but not all that heavy either. If you check out the weight of this stove, and compare it to others, it is not a big difference. |
| The only things that are a little frustrating are: having to prime the stove and the fact that the stove gets dirty quick from soot/smoke. Both of these are minor problems. Once you fire up the stove a few times on a single trip (I'd recommend trying it at home first if you've never done it before), priming it gets really easy and only takes an extra 1-2 minutes. The dirtiness is not a problem at all either because the stove comes with the MSR bag. |
| The only Time I would in fact recommend an alternative is if one was going on a cross country trip, where a lighter stove would be better. Otherwise, there is no alternative, this is a near perfect backpacking stove. |
