Riding with total confidence in your tires means that grip and safety must be optimal under any conditions, in extreme weather or at high speeds. Its why year after year Michelin introduces technological innovations and develops products with ever-higher performance.
The Michelin saga begins 1891, with the invention of the first demountable tire for bicycles. Over the ensuing years, Michelin has never stopped technological innovations for bicycles, such as the first flexible-bead clincher in 1978, the first tire with a high-density carcass in 1983, and the first tire with a high-performance silica rubber compound in 1995. In 2000, Michelin introduced the first tubeless tire for mountain bikes, and has been testing tubeless road tires in competition since 2003.
Nowadays, the development of bicycle tires benefits from the same research methods used in designing tires for Formula 1 and even the space shuttle. Michelin is the only manufacturer developing tires for such diverse R&D environments.
Michelin subjects its tires to real-world testing in competition. Racing remains the best laboratory for testing technological innovations in extreme conditions. And winning provides a powerful incentive for progress.
The Michelin system in action:
Michelin began racing in 1891 with Charles Terronts victory in one of cyclings greatest races: the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris. Finishing in 71 hours and 18 minutes, with nearly a 9-hour lead over second place, Terront proved the advantages of the Michelin demountable tire.
Then as now, Michelin assigns a development team to each form of racing. Throughout the Tour de France, a Michelin technician, acting as an interface between the riders and engineers, continually analyzes the tire situation for the teams. Every morning and afternoon, he collects their opinions, advises them on tire choice and optimal pressure, and answers questions before communicating his analyses to the Michelin development team, which correlates this data for further development. Michelin is the only tire manufacturer that regards bicycle racing on the same level as MotoGP or Formula 1. This scientific approach to research and development is directly responsible for Michelins successes, and for the innovations that eventually appear in consumer tires.
The ultra-lightweight Pro² Race features a supple casing for responsiveness and remarkable performance. Its essential equipment if youre serious about training or racing. It has the lowest rolling resistance of any racing tire, along with outstanding tread life*.
