Roomy enough for a longer dayhike or very efficient overnight packer. Pockets are nice for stuff that you grab often or want easily accessible. The real reason I wanted to review this was due to an experience that I had this past weekend. I was out geocaching with another adult and four kids, and we still have a good depth of snow here. Sun was nice but it was still rather chilly, only a few degrees over freezing point. We were well off-trail, and kids got wet and cold, despite warming measures and some clothing trades. GPS's lost signal, and we ended up bushwacking back to parking area. My pack weight when heading out was about 11 pounds, and I added about 6 pounds of wet clothing in as we went along. Sky darkening, temp dropping and kids not tolerating the conditions well, I threw my 36 pound three-year in the straps of this and put her on mny front, sternum clip latched on my upper back. I expected to lose the pack, whihc is why I didn't stuff her inside it on my back. Total weight, 55+ pounds, most hanging on the webbing of the straps, which was tightened down to about 1/4 of their max length. 75 minutes of bushwacking through some real wet conditions, with cranky wet toddler sleeping and therefore adding dead weight for a good portion of this, there is not ONE sign of tension on this pack. The construciton and durability is phenomenal!! I generally use my Jan's for caching, as I am messy and careless with my packs when on a treasure hunt, and don't care if my cheap packs get ruined. I am seriously impressed by this bag, and am reconsidering thinking of my Jan's as "junkpacks" any longer. This baby was used and abused under crap weather, and tolerated much more than it's normal weight with no problem at all.
Strap placement is a little wider than I would like at the shoulders, but would probably be very comfy for a man.
