I used my Explorer Asym Zip on a 2 week canoe trip in the wilderness of Northern Saskatchewan. While other people were looking for a place to set up a tent, I was already set up and off canoeing. More importantly, I slept like a baby. This is the only way to camp. It also rained for 2 nights and I stayed dry.
So well thought out in every detail. Enables you to camp in places you never considered in complete LNT. All you need is two trees about 15' apart, it doesn't matter whether this is on a steep slope or in a flat forest with tons of blowdown material beneath you. You sleep in comfort.
You have to be careful to properly insulate beneath you in cold weather. You don't need thickness, but closed cell is necessary. An additional kit is available for under insulation, but adds weight.
I've not seen any alternative that is so well thought out over so many years and versions.
Since I bought one of these I spend more time sleeping outside than inside. Very comfortable. You really do need to get a hammock specific insulation for the underside of the hammock to get the most comfort from the hammock. Setup is super fast compared to tents and 100x more comfortable. As long as you have some sturdy trees where you are going you can use this. Stock rain fly though it looks small actually provides pleanty of coverage for all but the most severe rain storms.
