| An old style piece of gear seen much more in Europe than in the USA today. If you like the rapping with an 8 or prefer the belay of one more power to you. Defiantly something a climber should know how to use. Still a common sight in Spain and Germany though so maybe us Americans are missing something... |

| Figure 8s tend to twist the ropes (especially after rappels). |
| By far most climbers have changed to tube style belay devices. Black Diamond ATC will do the job nicer Almost every time. |

| Twist your rope up and doesn't have the holding friction of a plate device. I only have three because someone gave me two and my old one. They work for teaching sessions of basic belay/rappel. |

Cred: 308 | | It's a figure eight, so bomber construction, easy to use, hard to mess up unless you have no experience climbing whatsoever (and even then you might still be able to rappel off it if you are somewhat mechanically inclined). |

| I hardly use this and it is just a run of the mill figure 8. I don't use these because the make the rope kinky and twisted. Better off with ATC or similar. |

| Great belay device. good for all aspects of climbing.
As well as a perfect back up. |
| Coils the rope more then other devices. |
| Any device that has a flat or round ball the rope can roll over. |
