I have built plenty of snow caves but haven't dug anyone out of an avalanche. I chose the 5 because with the short handle the larger blade would become even less efficient, this thing will kill your back if you plan to build kickers with it. Super lite and small making it the best alpine shovel in my opinion (add dead man holes for perfection) If you want to cut through hard ave snow get a metal blade.
