| Black Diamond Camalot C4 4.9 out of 5 based on 71 user reviews.
Cred: 2509 | | durable, wide expansion range, smooth trigger. These cams are great. They place easily and are full strength even if they walk back and umbrella. (taken a fall that way, and can tell you, they hold!) |
| they are a bit heavier than other cams, but they are worth the slight difference. |
| Go for metolious mastercam below a .5 size. |
Cred: 1096 | | Double axle and the expansion range is big. The cams parts are nice and smooth, it feels well made. As for holding falls I have yet to have one pull out. Walking seams to be pretty minimum |
| Cheepy plastic trigger. Ended up breaking one after a fall that resulted in the cam being weighted at a angle. IT mad the removal kinda hard |
Cred: 1306 | | Review by MikePB on Feb. 27, 2011 | | A MUST HAVE. These cams are durable, easy to place, have a wide range, and are what all other cams are compared to. |
| Expensive. Heavier than single axle cams. Not as flexible as others. |
| For really small sizes, I go with Metolius Master Cams because they are lighter and more flexible. |
Cred: 1194 | | Review by bruton on Jul. 25, 2011 | | Old Blue my go to Piece of trad gear. Fits in almost all the large hand+ sized climbs.
Duel axis allows for passive placements. |
| Can walk a little if placed horizontally with no back stop. |
Cred: 844 | | Theres a reason these are the Golden Standard and have earned so many awards. While I have a number of other Cams on my rack, these hands down the backbone of it and can only be supplemented, never replaced. |
| Wouldn't mind extendable slings on them |
Cred: 40569 | | Review by marks on Mar. 31, 2007 | | .75 and up are excellent. Great range, smooth trigger and do not walk. |
| For the smaller sizes (below .75) I would recommend either metolius, aliens or black diamond's c3s. |
Cred: 55 | | I really like these in .5-6. I like the Metolius TCU for the smaller end micro cams. Camalots feel more stable when placed when compared to the larger sized WC Friends. These have a smooth trigger action and are really easy to place. Rack these with Neutrinos and you will be really happy. |
| Slightly heavier... but I would take them over most other brands any day. |
| Metolius TCU instead of the smaller sized camalots. |
Cred: 195 | | Durable, Well Manufactured, Dual Axis, Beefy Sling, Repairable, Color Coded, Very Smooth Trigger, Must Have! |
| Expensive and fairly stiff stem (can walk on you) |
| Not really an alternative but supplement a C4 rack with link cams |
Cred: 248 | | Review by Shifu on Jul. 09, 2011 | | With really smooth action and rock-solid construction, these are the gold-standard in cams for a reason. Everybody owns some, and aside from the weight, everybody loves them. |
| There are better cams out there for sizes at or below 0.5.
These are a bit heavier than other cams, but you get a bigger expansion range in return. |
| Can't recommend anything else for pieces larger than a half-inch or so. These are just too good. |
Cred: 601 | | light, easy to place, wide range, stays in place, |
| for smaller .5 and less get C3, metolius, or Alien |
 Cred: 863 | | i have 1, and 3 great range, hearty. just added a .5,.75 and a 2!!!!!! |
| ????? all i have used in this size |
Cred: 881 | | Very strong and will hold up against the test of time (including massive whippers, odd placements, and aiding) |
| slightly heavy, but that's the trade off with more range. |
Cred: 289 | | Solid feel, trigger is easy to find and pull even while wearing gloves, cam stops + dual axis cams so you they are strong in "passive" mode - on purpose or not. |
Cred: 233 | | The best. I like them down to size .4 despite what others say about Aliens/TCUs being better at that size. |
Cred: 180 | | Two axles, wide expansion range, so easy to clean! Can place as passive gear. |
| Heavier than single axle cams. |

Cred: 218 | | Durability, range, able to use passively as well, proven, ergonomic |
| For alpine climbing I guess they could be slightly heavy. |
| For the 5/6 sizes, WC Friends. For anything under .5, aliens. |
Cred: 52 | | color coded, probably the best you can buy, good range and a lot of sizes |
| expensive, but all trad gear is expensive |

Cred: 77 | | Very reliable and well built |
| Variety is the spice of life. There are definitely some size cracks these don't protect great. |
Cred: 9 | | The backbone of almost every climber's rack. Durable, bomber, great range, smooth action. I feel completely secure climbing above my C4s. |
| Master cams or C3s for sizes .5 and below. |
Cred: 8 | | Heavy duty, large expansion range, ergonomic trigger. |
| Go with Metolius or Aliens under .5. Fixe should be coming out with new aliens soon. |
Cred: 5 | | The best cams for hands and above! smooth actions, great thumb loop. uber easy to place. |
| no extending sling, smaller sizes are heavy for the range they provide |
| METOLIOUS TCU for small ranges, DMM Dragons for hands and above. |
Cred: 5 | | Their range and versatility are great. These are a staple/backbone for your rack. I like these better than the previous version because you have the option of clipping into the thumb loop. |
| A bit heavier than other, not as versatile cams. |
| Metolius cams are quite nice. I haven't used the new DMM Dragon's, but I believe these are cheaper which is nice. |
Cred: 99 | | Stable when placed correctly, Durable, |

Cred: 99 | | Wide expansion range, durable, solid placements. |

Cred: 3 | | Review by jmayo on Jun. 16, 2011 | | This bad boys have a great expansion range, color-coded, and although not recommended can be place passively. |

Cred: 5 | | Good range, solid build, very smooth action, very easy to place. |
| Metolius master cams for the smaller sizes (below .75) |
