Good Features
Nice entry level disc brake. It will stop you when you need it to. I'm using a BB5 on each wheel of my 09 Gary Fisher G2 hardtail with Shimano XT centerlock rotors.
Bad Features
Don't spend too much on these, I wouldn't drop more than $30 per wheel for caliper and rotor. The BB7 offers more adjustability for only about $20 more per wheel.

You also might find that you wear through pads quicker with these. Since they have less adjustability you can have some nasty drag on your pads and not even notice it while you're riding.
Recommended Alternatives
I got a set for free, but if I was buying a new mechanical disc set I would choose the BB7.

    From Price Point:
    There's Power in Simplicity
To this day, the BB5 continues to attract all types of riders who crave the simplicity and elegant function of the worlds best cable-actuated brake. Its more powerful and is easier to set up than any mechanical disc ... ever. Details including the dual-pad adjustment knobs, easy pad replacement, precision ball bearing actuation, and infinitely variable spring tension details ... mean control like youve never felt before. Plus, using any of our Ball Bearing Disc BrakesTM means that you can choose one of our levers with Speed Dial for sweet, adjustable modulation. Isnt the freedom of choice swell? our Speed Dial levers for sweet, adjustable modulation. You cant get that on any hydraulic. Last but not least, this year we gave the BB7 a tasty new finish, new inboard/outboard adjustment knobs and a beefy two-piece, forged body.
