 | After being in a recent white out I started thinking more about getting a GPS (yes I am still a map and compass guy).
Hoping for a watch that will take way points (not just a strait shot back to the car) for hiking/climbing. Think doing a ridge that you want to stay on while traveling back in poor visibility. I really don't want a big GPS unit, but can manage a watch style one.
Need: way point back tracking and long battery life 16+ hr
Want: altimeter and time.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Hey a GPS without map & compass skills is useless so I'm right there with you. To be honest I've never been pleased with the watch GPS units for anything other then altimeters / distance ran calculators. You just don't have much screen to work with, therefore good luck trying to read a topo map / way points etc that you'll need to get out of a true white out.
I personally use the:
I like the black and white screen because batteries last longer. It's a NON-internal battery (internal batteries look appealing until you realize you can't bring a backup without buying their propitiatory battery). It weighs 5.3 oz with batteries, waterproof & has a 18 hr battery life. It's considered a bare bones GPS but does everything you need to get out of a white out.
Be aware that though that Best Buy cost is a steal you need to buy the separate Topo software to get the full benefits.

 | The new Ledgend is awesome too. Color screen, better antenna, and expandable memory.

But, if you are set on a watch, and you want to do waypoints, I would go for the
It takes batteries, rather than a charger, so you can bring extras (the watches have pathetic battery life).
