I want to swap out my Dura Ace RD-7800 rear derailleur with the XTR M-971 Derailleur so I can use a 11-34 cassette. Will the XTR work with the 7800 STI shifters? I realize the derailleur doesn't really care if you are using it for an 8, 9, or 10 speed because the indexing is in the shifters, but I don't know if the actuation rations for the XTR is the same for the 7800 STI shifters.
Do you know of anyone who has done this?

It'll work fine. A number of downhillers switch the other way as well.
