I have a Surly Cyclocross with a XT mountain bike derailleur on it. Does RD stand for road? What is the difference between a short cage and a long cage?

Longer cages can handle more gear options. Bigger gearing ranges.
RD is Rear Derailleur. How many front rings do you have?

Thanks Matt, I have 3 up front - mountain cranks, chainrings, and mountain freewheel. Sounds like I need to have a long cage???
