I think the basic rule of thumb was if the board fits between your chin and nose then it fits. Currently the core materials are getting much more advanced and they are able to make stiffer and stronger snowboards. Ultimately it's your weight and ability that allows you to put a snowboard on edge. If your board is too long or you're to light for the board you won't be able to put it on edge and the board will be riding you instead of the other way around. And the opposite would be if you're to heavy for a board then it will feel like a noodle under your feet and at high speeds you're experience board chatter. Hope this helps.
