Can I attach a sleeping mat like the thermorest prolite plus to the outside and if so what would I need?

Hello,
I would just slide in under the lid of the pack. The straps adjust and it will fit nicely there.
Other then that there isn't a lot of good attachment points for your sleeping pad.
You may want to get the Osprey Talon 44, it will give you extra room
