Q: MSR Carbon Reflex 3 Tent | |

Camping in the Fla Keys, with REI Quarter Dome 3, aluminum tent pole ends (the ends next to the ground), after a few weeks are seriously weathered (one of them worn to the point of almost disappearing altogether). Is there a way to prevent this? Would some poles (like maybe the carbon) be more resistant than others?

That is very interesting how fast that happened. Corrosion from the salty air, I assume? What do people put on the bottom of their cars to avoid that--maybe you could get ahold of some for your poles. Yes, carbon fiber would be better, but I can't recall what material the tips of the poles are made of. I think they are metal too. I emailed MSR for clarification. I will let you know when (if) they email me back.
Good question!

Hey Dean,
MSR got back to me. The poles have plastic tips--no metal. They mentioned they could sell you just the poles, assuming the diameter is the same. They are looking into it for the QD3.
Otherwise, the tent is awesome too. I have a Hubba Hubba. I like that the walls are vertical (actually past vertical), so you can sit up in it in any spot, even if there are two of you in it. The mesh is such good quality that when you set it up without the fly you wouldn't even know it is there. In other words, you have an undistorted view of the stars.

 | Okay, they said:

So, you could try swapping out the tips (although I don't know how well they would go on aluminum, it makes more sense with CF).
Cool of them.
