Hi there,

I do too. I am a long distance backpacker and I trashed my knees. There is a lot to a knee problem. Have you been diagnosed with a particular one?

I am no doctor, and I don't know what your particular issue is, but I can tell you what helps for me and many people I know.

1. Trekking poles. You have them, and you will start to use them more efficiently the longer you use them--especially downhill. If you are in the market for another style, the Super Makalu has been around forever, and people swear by the antishock. The only complaint is the adjustment mechanism. The
has ergonomic grips that are cork (so they mold to the shape of your hand and don't get slippery with sweat). The coolest thing is their "flicklock" system. It is easier and longer lasting than any mechanism on the market.

2. Pack weight. Lowering your pack weight will reduce stress on your whole body. Even with mainstream equipment, I don't see why someone couldn't have their base weight below 10-12 lbs. Of course, if you are carrying a couple of extra pounds on your body, it is the same thing.

3. Footwear. You are absolutely right on with that--most peoples' knee problems start with their feet. This will match your foot (pronate, supinate, high/low arch, small/large heel, wide foot, etc.), you pack weight, your terrain, and your mileage. So, I can't really offer you a quick answer on that. If you give me an idea of these factors for you, I might be able to make a better suggestion.

4. Insoles. I swear by them. If you can't get to a podiatrist for the real deal, I recommend
. Not necessarily this one, but if we figure...

...out your footwear, I can recommend a particular product.

5. Knee Support. Again, this completely depends on what your issue(s) are. I use a patellar strap. Some people use an infrapatellar wrap or strap. It helps me a lot!

So, I hope that helps. I look forward to hearing from you more.

Melissa
