Hello, I am really interested in the 09/10 Apache line and was hoping to
get some advice. OK, I am a pretty confident Advanced-Expert skier 45
years old, 6'2", 250lbs. I have been skiing on Rossi B2 for the past 5
years and I think there is a ski that may be better for me. I want a
stable ski at speed and one that rips groomers but also eases through
the crud/heavy snow and works in the POW. I am leaning towards the Recon
as it is marketed as the one quiver ski, but not opposed to the
Crossfire or Xplorer all in a 184 size. Based
on my stats and wants can you help me choose? Size? Tahoe, CA Skier.
Thanks a million! Chris

The recon was one of my favorites from last season as a versitile all mountain ski. It does everything well, but isn't the best at much. It has great edge grip for medium/long radius turns on the groomers and is stable at speed. Most powder days in Tahoe aren't bottomless, so the apache is wide enough. (The storm we had last weekend was an exception.)
The Crossfire is more of an on trail ski. It's pretty stiff and a bit narrower than the other two, so it gives up some soft snow performance.
If you want to lean more toward off trail, soft snow, the explorer isn't a bad choice either. It will chatter a little more at high speed on hard snow because of the soft layup and flat camber/early rise tips, but will make turn initiation a lot easier in the soft stuff.
I'm 5'6" 155 expert and prefer the 174. With your height and weight, the 184 is probably a good place.
The B2 was a really damp ski that rides quietly without a lot of action. The K2 line has more character and pop when you push them. It's mostly personal preference between the two, but I wasn't as attracted to the rossi.
