Hello Gear guru,
My wife got me a Big Bear 83 to replace my Trailwise (30 year old) external frame pack. I have never had and internal pack before. Will I be happy with it? What should I look for?

 | Hi there,
I think you'll have no problem with an internal pack. For the longest time, external frames were the only option out on the market. The main reason was the lack of materials available and old school technology. The only way backpack manufacturers were able to create backpacks with large capacities was to create an equally large frame to hold the weight and to distribute it properly over your body.
As the tech improved and lighter/stronger materials were developed, manufactures found ways to shift from a tube frame to a flexible plastic sheet frame that could slide inside the backpack. The result was a frame that could hold the same amount of weight with less overall bulk. Internal frame backs now a days are designed lighter, better fitting, and provided more mobility to the hiker. I think you'll find this new pack to be just right. I might recommend having it fit to you. You could do this at your local outdoor store. New internal packs are highly adjustable so you want to take advance of ever bell and whistle. Hope this helps.
