Hi Gear Guru - I've got a 2004/5 Cannondale Gemini 900 with an FSA Orbit Xtreme Pro "onepointfive" cartridge headset. The head set has play in it. Tightening the top bolt doesn't help (if I tighten so much as to eliminate the play then the steering won't turn anymore).

The bearings themselves don't seem to be damaged; it looks more like there's a part missing - like maybe a ring or cone of some kind to take up the clearance between the steering tube and the inner diameter of the top bearing? At the moment, there is nothing between the upper bearing and the big black uppper ring with all the writing on it. I can send a photo if you respond with an email address. Alternatively, if I could see an exploded diagram, then it might tell me if there's supposed to be a ring.

I look forward to your response.

Hey David,

I sounds like you are missing the top compression ring. Its a silver ring with a slot in it that sits on the top bearing. You should have 8 pieces total. Crown race, bottom bearing, headset cup, headset cup, top bearing, compression ring, shim washer and then upper cover. The top pieces are very important at keeping the headset spaced properly for the correct adjustment. Hope this helps.

Hi Tom.

Fantastic answer! It is clear that I am missing the compression ring and the shim washer (what's the shim washer's purpose & description?).

And besides that; is there perhaps some kind of seal or dust cap that goes in there? When I took it apart there was a torn flat rubber washer (or two) above the upper bearing.

Best regards!

Well, the compression ring works to keep the headset assembled as well as acting as the top crown bearing race. The spacer keeps the top dust cap from pressing down on the head tube making it impossible to adjust the headset.
