Generally sand requires a slightly slower rebound damping and a little less compression.

I live Las Cruces New Mexico and our trails are anything from sand to slick rock. We have everything but mud and roots. I have it on a brain equiped Stumpjumper.

That fork will work on your bike. The one pictured is a 2007 with 5.1" travel.
