According to Adam at BD:
"...unfortunately these will not fit the older cobras, nor was the older cobra meant to be a leash-less tool, so modifying the tool or a strike or fang not meant for the tool to make it leash-less is not something I can recommend..."
Which means it probably has been done, but I can't find any links showing how, nor does it seem like a good idea.

It takes a bit of creative manipulation of the fang with a demel tool, here is a link.
