I want to buy my first trekking poles to take on a trip to Peru. I'm a small framed woman, need to be able to pack the poles, want to save my back and knees which aren't what they used to be. Which models would you suggest I consider? Thanks

Lucky! Are you planning on trail hiking or using them just for around town?
First, whatever you choose, you should get a "compact" or a "womens" pole. They are shorter, lighter, and will also fold down smaller for travel.
I love the Black Diamond Spire compact trekking pole. However, you should know that it does take a little bit of hand strength to lock down the bottom section. If your fingers aren't what they used to be, either consider a Leki. The locking mechanism is easier on the hands.
I like the:
The cork forms to the shape of your hand and doesn't slip if your hands get wet (or sweaty), they are light, and the fold down small.
Otherwise, the Spire is a great pole! It is comfy and durable and the flicklock (if your hands aren't cold and are strong enough) is nice because it never slips itself out of lock.
Have fun! Are you going to do the Inca Trail?

P.S. If traveling on an airplane, you may want to check them. I have been given grief on some flights (and not on others). Once, I bought a rubber walking tip so that they didn't look like a "weapon", and they let me carry them on.
