Big Agnes Encampment
$127.47 - 179.95

Hi there, I bought this bag because it was supposed to be wide. But when I inserted the pad in it, I barely fit in it. What is a good wide bag out there?

Thank you,

Joe

Are you putting the pad in the sleeve on the or inside the bag?

I put the pad in the sleeve, and it fit well. I tried the bag without the pad, and I was comfortable, but the pad made the bag smaller for me, and I was uncomfortable so I need a wide sleeping bag now. Do you know of a good one?

thank you,

Joe

The Hog Park mentioned above is about 8-10" bigger round than the one you have. It is filled with Qualofill which is not very compressible but the insulation has been around forever. I don't know your size but I have a Montbell Super Spiral #1 in a long. It is sewn different than most bags so it has a mechanical stretch (due to the construction) and it also has elastic thread that also expands. Montbell says it will stretch to 81" in the shoulder area. I find the bag is much better fitting than the 68" shoulder models. Your current is a 70" I believe. I bought the UL down which was expensive but they make a synthetic with the same features. The Montbell's seem to be real popular with the 6' - 6'4" 240-300lbs crowd. People that thrash at night seem to like them too. Here is the link to the synthetic http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=798&p_id=2321118 Good luck.

Hi,

Which sleeping pad did you put in there?

Thanks RTBEARD, and Melissa. My stature is like this, I'm 5'10 250 with broad shoulders, and chest. When I inserted the Big agnes 2.5" pad into the Big Agnes Encampment sleeping bag, it seemed to have made that bag much smaller, and I felt like I was in a coffin. The good thing is that it's a full zipper and I was able to vent that way. The bag and pad in general performed well, when I did zip up, I was nice and toasty, but as rtbeard mentions, I'm a thrasher, and side sleeper so it was a restless 4 nights in this bag. On the fifth night, I slept like a baby...in the back of my suv. :) I'm going to look into the Hog park, and the Montbell's. I think one of those might be just what I need. Thanks for the replies, and help with this. I have a backpacking trip in a couple of weeks, and need to have this bag ironed out before my trip.

Best Wishes!

Joe

Ahh, okay. Good to know. I think most people are using 1.5" pads. I will keep that in mind. Thanks!

You are welcome. As a Big Agnes fan and an owner I do want to comment about the sleeve for the pad. I sleep on my side not by choice but out of habit. I always start on my back and usually will end up on my side. If you are a tight fit inside the bag and have a pad that is fully inflated you will pull the pad towards you when you roll creating a taco effect. I find more often than not that this pressure from the pad will awaken me. I have found that if you deflate the pad it will it form around your body with much less pressure. While I belive the sleeve for the bag has merits I also find that it poses challenges for side sleepers.
