Ok experts let see how you do here. I have been looking at the design of the front point of the Grivel G14s (I Own a pair) and the Black diamond Cyborg (considering purchasing).
I noticed that with the Grivels the hood starts immediately after the sharpened edge. Where as the BD Cyborgs, the hood starts about half way back.
Originally the hood came about to prevent sheering of the points. BUT
How or does this differing the hood flarement effect the penetration, stability, holding power, other, of the crampon? And I thinking strictly for steep technical ice.

 | Hello,
From my experience the longer hoods loose some penetration, very little though. This is because you are pushing more material to get it in. But I find a reduced flexing of points when you are on rock with longer hoods. Overall holding powder is slightly higher, shearing is reduced with the longer hood.
In vertical ice, there will be a very minimal if noticeable holding power between those two models.

 | Yeah I figured it would be something like that.
I aslo figure that the reduced hood might also help in mixed if you have to stick the points into a crack. A larger hood might get in the way more...
Either way on solid ice I think the cyborgs will be a pretty sweet crampon.

 | Unless there is something wrong with your G14s there isn't a significant difference. The consideration of hood length and point flex is also effected by the rigidity of the steel and its connection to the rest of the crampon. Since both companies have designed these crampons specifically for vertical ice and not for major weight savings you will not find a noticeable difference. The only benefit of the BDs would be the monopoint configuration, if you are new spend at least a few seasons in dual points. Hope this helps

 | I still consider my self a newish ice climber, this is only my 4th year of ice.
The G14 mono point just fine, I switch off and on between the two configuration. I like the dual points with my La spotivias, Trango extremes(silver bullets), because being a softer side boot there is not quite the ankle support as with a full plastic boot (monos do really do well with).
So any way I was just wondering about the slight differences between the two.
When I get the cyborgs it will then come down to which crampon my wife likes or which fits her boots best, and she will choose my G14 or the cyborgs; I will get the left overs :)
