Blog: The Story of 'Take Back the Tap'
While we're (obviously) obsessed with outdoor gear, here at Spadout we try to keep perspective on the bigger picture: ultimately the life-cycle of our gear, all the way from conception, manufacturing and use, to recycling, reusing and disposal. Luckily, the trend of recycling and reusing gear has boomed in recent years for outdoor gear manufacturers (ex. Patagonia's Common Threads Recycling Program, Timberland's Earthkeepers eco-conscious line, and many, many more) and the green revolution has taken hold.

This summer at the Outdoor Retailer show, it seemed every company is in the process of a 'green' overhaul. Which is great news, once you wade through the hype and techy PR they sling at you. But I was reminded of a very simple product that overhauled the hydration sector decades ago – the reusable waterbottle. The outdoor industry fell head over heels for the original Nalgene (developed in the 1970s) – that durable reusable waterbottle targeted for the outdoors-person – and hasn't stopped loving it since (although it may be more about what stickers you have on your bottle, which is alright because you're still using the bottle aren't you?). My 'duh' moment came when I stumbled across Annie Leonard's The Story of Bottled Water. We're all rushing from one thing to another, but I bet you've got eight minutes you can spare. Eight minutes to watch Annie Leonard tell you The Story of Bottled Water and fall in love with your bottle all over again.

Speaking of stickers on your waterbottle, if you'd like a few Spadout stickers, just send a request with your name and mailing address to Leah Miller:
